Polovski's GLIDE emulators FAQ
Older 3D games like Red Baron3D use
an old method to talk to the older 3D graphics cards such as 3dfx Voodoo.
This method (or "API") is called Glide. However Glide is no longer
used by modern graphics cards as they use OpenGL or Direct3D now.
So to play games like RB3D you need a Glide "emulator".
A Glide emulator converts everything from the Glide calls a game makes to the graphics card. It converts them to OpenGL calls or Direct3D calls instead.
There are only 2 Glide wrappers that seems to work well for Red Baron for a mixture of video cards, they are dgVoodoo and OpenGlide. dgVoodoo is discussed further down.
OpenGLide uses OpenGL.
dgVoodoo (uses Direct3D). Both are great, but dgVoodoo is improving
all the time and recommended by Polovski.
Note: If you have an old Voodoo graphics
card then you already have Glide and don't need a Glide emulator!However most people don't have a Voodoo card anymore in their
modern systems.
I'll deal with OpenGLide first...
OpenGLide:
==========
This is a good Glide emulator that
works well with Red Baron 3D.
There are no hard and fast rules as everyone has a different system, but the
settings you need to use generally are the same as those found in the FAQ
that Kess included with FCJ, or on his website
www.plgrafix.com/faq.htm
Of the different versions of OpenGLide only these 4 specific versions are
currently suitable for RB3D :
--------------------------------------------------
v0.07b4 : www.glidos.net
works very well.
--------------------------------------------------
v0.07b5:
direct download link:
http://twtelecom.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/openglide/OpenGLide_v007b5.zip
--------------------------------------------------
v0.09RC5 :
(File is OpenGLide_v009rc5.zip) tricky to find it on that page so whole link
to the download is:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/openglide/OpenGLide_v009rc5.zip?download
RB3D runs very well indeed with 0.09RC5, I have an ATI9700 Pro and that
works fine.
--------------------------------------------------
v0.09 RC6 :
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/openglide/OpenGLide_009rc6.zip
This can give an fps increase but also I noticed a major slowdown on takeoff
sometimes.. your milage may vary.
--------------------------------------------------
Or you can see the whole list of all OpenGLide downloads (many bad for RB3D
though) here
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/openglide
INSTALLATION...
================
Once you unzip that into your SIERRA\REDBARON3D directory you need to edit
the Openglid.ini file. Here's my old openglid.ini (configuration file for
OpenGLide):
Version=0.09rc5
[Options]
WrapperPriority=2
CreateWindow=0
InitFullScreen=1
EnableMipMaps=0
IgnorePaletteChange=1
Wrap565to5551=1
EnablePrecisionFix=1
EnableMultiTextureEXT=1
EnablePaletteEXT=1
EnableVertexArrayEXT=0
TextureMemorySize=4
FrameBufferMemorySize=16
Note important option Texturememorysize is set to 4 -you should really
always use 4 there to stop texture corruption in game.
Also for ATI cards set IgnorePaletteChange=1 - I believe
NVidia users can leave this at default (0).
[Help editing ini files: If you have trouble editing files then right click on the openglid.ini in your RedBaron3D folder, choose "open with" in XP/2000 and select notepad. In Win98, left click once on it to select it first, then when highlighted, right click, choose "open with" and select Notepad). When you save the file make sure in the save as dialogue box you change the "file type" from ".txt" to "*.*"]
NOTE: NVidia cards have a setting for PCI texture or frame buffer memory in
the OpenGL settings in display properties, advanced. Set this to 16.
re NVidia cards and OpenGLide, Von Kesselberg posted this previously :
"Von Fauster mentioned this at the
Promised Land forum, and it seems to work. I'll just quote him, from the
thread, To Voodoo or not to Voodoo, (msg 316.10), "Went with Openglide
version v009rc5, reset the texture memory to 4 and the framebuffermemory to
16. I seemed to recall that there was a connection between openglide and
opengl, so I went to my videocard display properties and maxed the memory
(which is 16, I had turned it down to the minimum for some reason) in PCI
mode under the opengl tab, and set the antialising to 2x."
Now the default for PCI texture memory in my GF 4 is five. Setting it to 16,
the same as "framebuffermemory" in the OpenGLide ini, really does make a
difference for me. Fps still swing wildly depending on what's in my view in
the game. But flying HA last night, I was sometimes over 40 fps, and not
below 20. AND scud layer tearing, which has been a real problem for me,
almost vanished entirely, but not quite."
Someone else posted this:
----------------------------------
2820.2 in reply to 2820.1
Here is what works for my 9700 Pro...
Version=Version0.07b4
[Options]
EnableMMX=0
CreateWindow=0
InitFullScreen=1
EnableMipMaps=0
IgnorePaletteChange=1
EnableFog=1
EnablePrecisionFix=1
EnableWrap565=1
EnableMultiTextureEXT=1
EnablePaletteEXT=1
EnablePackedPixelsEXT=0
EnableVertexArrayEXT=0
EnableSecondaryColorEXT=0
EnableFogCoordEXT=1
TextureMemorySize=4
WrapperPriority=2
FrameBufferMemorySize=16
You can get some info and help for running old games at:
http://vogons.zetafleet.com -there's an OpenGLide section, amongst other
useful sections.
and www.swwisa.net the
home of most Red Baron 3D mod makers, players, and boffins :).
Alternatives:
Some other emerging alternatives (with glitches but better in some other
ways...)
Zeckensack's Glide wrapper:
Another new working Glide wrapper - this one from Zecken I tried this in
August and it didn't work too well, but another version was released in
September and it works very well. It seems slower than OpenGLide but
different and also doesn't have a few of the glitches I have in OpenGLIde.
So worth a look.

might be worth a try...

dgVoodoo by DEGE, 2003/2004:
==============================
dgVoodoo Glide emulator using DirectX7 calls rather than OpenGL:
http://dege.freeweb.hu/
Note Dege the author has fixed many problems already and it now works
excellently for Red Baron 3D!
I am helping Dege at the moment by
testing new versions - he said he wants to make his emulator work as well as
possible with Red Baron 3D.
There is a readme_eng.txt included in the zip of dgVoodoo read this!
